Ten years back, Barry was playing for Accrington Stanley. Today, he's dedicated supporting Thomas Tuchel secure World Cup glory next summer. The road from player to coach started as an unpaid coach coaching youngsters. He remembers, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and it captivated him. He had found his destiny.

Metoric Climb

The coach's journey stands out. Commencing in a senior role at Wigan, he developed a standing through unique exercises and great man-management. His club career included top European clubs, and he held coaching jobs abroad across multiple countries. He's coached big names such as top footballers. Currently, in the England setup, he's fully immersed, the top as he describes it.

“Dreams are the starting point … Yet I'm convinced that obsession can move mountains. You envision the goal but then you bring it down: ‘How can we achieve it, gradually?’ Our goal is the World Cup. But dreams won’t get it done. We have to build a methodical process enabling us to maximize our opportunities.”

Obsession with Details

Passion, focusing on tiny aspects, is central to his philosophy. Toiling around the clock all the time, they both challenge limits. Their methods feature mental assessments, a strategy for high temperatures for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and fostering teamwork. Barry emphasizes the England collective and dislikes phrases such as "break".

“This isn't a vacation or a rest,” he explains. “We had to build something that the players want to be part of and, secondly, they feel so stretched that going back is a relief.”

Ambitious Trainers

He characterizes himself and Tuchel as extremely driven. “Our goal is to master each element of play,” Barry affirms. “We seek to command the entire field and that's our focus most of our time to. Our responsibility not only to stay ahead of changes but to beat them and set new standards. This is continuous with a mindset of solving issues. And to simplify complexity.

“We have 50 days with the players ahead of the tournament. We must implement a complex game that offers a strategic upper hand and we have to make it so clear in that period. We need to progress from idea to information to know-how to performance.

“To create a system that allows us to be productive in the 50 days, we have to use the entire 500 days we'll have after our appointment. When the squad is away, it's vital to develop bonds with each player. We must dedicate moments on the phone with them, we need to watch them play, sense their presence. If we limit ourselves to that time, we have no chance.”

Upcoming Matches

The coach is focusing ahead of the concluding matches of World Cup qualifiers – facing Serbia at home and away to Albania. They've already ensured their place at the finals by winning all six games and six clean sheets. However, they won't relax; quite the opposite. Now is the moment to reinforce the team’s identity, to maintain progress.

“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the style of play must reflect all the positives of English football,” Barry explains. “The fitness, the flexibility, the robustness, the integrity. The England jersey should be harder than ever to get but comfortable to have on. It should feel like a cape not protective gear.

“To make it light, we need to provide a system that lets them to operate as they do in club games, that resonates with them and lets them release restrictions. They need to reduce hesitation and increase execution.

“You can gain psychological edges available to trainers in attack and defense – playing out from the back, closing down early. However, in midfield in that part of the ground, we feel the game has become stuck, especially in England's top flight. Coaches have extensive data now. They understand tactics – defensive shapes. Our aim is to increase tempo across those 24 metres.”

Passion for Progress

His desire for improvement knows no bounds. While training for the Uefa pro licence, he felt anxious about the presentation, as his cohort featured big names such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. So, to build his skill set, he entered tough situations imaginable to practise giving them. Including a prison in his home city of Liverpool, and he trained detainees in a football drill.

He earned his license in 2020 at the top of the class, and his dissertation – The Undervalued Set Piece, for which he analysed thousands of throw-ins – was published. Lampard was among those convinced and he brought Barry to his team with the Blues. After Lampard's dismissal, it said plenty that Chelsea removed nearly all assistants but not Barry.

His replacement at Stamford Bridge took over, and shortly after, they claimed the Champions League. When he was let go, Barry stayed on under Graham Potter. However, when Tuchel returned at Munich, he recruited Barry from Chelsea and back alongside him. The FA view them as a partnership similar to Southgate and Holland.

“I’ve never seen anything like Thomas {in terms of personality and methodology|in character and approach|
