British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of entry passages providing entry to the site... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - also known as ISIS - enforced militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows British leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," Healey added. "Including them were numerous British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
