Jimmy Cliff, Music Superstar and Cultural Figure, Passes Away at 81 Years Old
The world mourns the passing of Jimmy Cliff, the celebrated Jamaican musician and performer whose captivating vocal talent played a key role in spreading reggae music worldwide. The artist has died at the age of 81.
“It’s with profound sadness that I announce that my beloved husband, Jimmy Cliff, has passed away due to a seizure episode followed by pneumonia,” posted his spouse Latifa on Instagram. “I am grateful for his family, close friends, fellow artists and colleagues who walked with him on his journey. To all his fans globally, please know that your encouragement was his strength throughout his whole career … Jimmy, my dear, may you rest peacefully. I will follow your wishes.” The message was co-signed by their offspring, Lilty and Aken.
Jimmy Cliff was beloved for hits such as “You Can Get It If You Really Want”, I Can See Clearly Now and Wonderful World, Beautiful People. His upbeat musical style and uplifting spirit earned him a vast and longstanding following.
Beyond his musical achievements, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972’s drama film “The Harder They Come”, a role that was highly acclaimed and is viewed as a cornerstone of film in Jamaica.
He is one of just a handful of artists, including the legendary Bob Marley and others, to be awarded the esteemed Jamaican Order of Merit.
