The Creators of Baldur's Gate 3 Clarifies Its Implementation of Generative AI for Next Project
The team behind acclaimed titles like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin recently teased its next major project, generating immense anticipation within the industry. However, subsequent comments from the studio's co-founder have added a new dimension to the narrative, touching on the developer's philosophy toward generative artificial intelligence.
AI as a Creative Assistant, Not a Substitute
In a latest message, the studio's founder outlined that the developer is utilizing AI technology for certain supporting tasks. These involve developing pitch decks, producing early-stage visual ideas, and writing placeholder text.
Notably, Vincke emphasized that the end content in the game will be created exclusively by actual creatives. "We are creating every line in-house," he affirmed.
Larian is constantly increasing our pool of concept artists and are currently forming writing teams.
Since concept art is being particularly mentioned — we right now have over twenty concept artists and have positions available for further talent.
Each initiative we do is additive and focused on having people spend more time on actual creation.
Any AI system applied correctly is additive to a developer's workflow, never a stand-in for their talent.
Addressing Concerns and Clarifying the Vision
The admission of using AI at first sparked backlash among some the community. In reaction, Vincke offered further clarification on online platforms.
"Our team utilizes these tools to explore references, similar to we use the internet and art books," he explained. "In the conceptual planning process we use it as a simple sketch for layout which we then substitute with authentic artwork."
He added, "Our studio recruits creatives for their inherent skill, not for their willingness to execute what a algorithm proposes."
Key Areas of AI Integration
Vincke had earlier outlined the company's practical strategy to AI and ML, categorizing its use into primary functions:
- Streamlining Repetitive Work: This includes motion capture cleaning, voice editing, and pipeline-specific tasks like adapting animations for different models.
- Fast-Tracked Experimentation: Using systems to rapidly prototype rough versions of gameplay ideas to validate concepts before full production.
- Experimental Frontiers: Exploring how machine learning could in the future create emergent gameplay, particularly in managing dynamic reactions in a complex RPG.
He explicitly noted that key artistic domains — such as music composition — are are absolutely not fields where the company is cutting creative input. On the contrary, Larian is expanding its staff in these very positions.
"Larian is neither launching a game with any AI components, and we are certainly not planning on reducing creatives to swap them out with artificial intelligence," Vincke concluded.
