The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Track
The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure by the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting opening credits. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at several heart-wrenching personal histories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
Overall, the intro appears amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that something was missing in the music selection.
This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional song created by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second release released by the production company's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I believe that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that was part of the second campaign's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Including singing from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as the writer, the track was catchy and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series yet, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you start an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but from what I know of this party, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, Critical Role has stated that the animated show will have some changes and differences from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its intro seems to be among these.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
